On the edge of Ashburton is a small sacred well. It is commonly known as ‘Gulwell’ (St Gudula’s Well). Today it looks like an insignificant weed-choked gutter but for centuries it has been a place of pilgrimage. Sited by the Old Totnes Road, the tiny well is said to have curative powers and the water was thought to be beneficial to those with poor eyesight. It is said that many of the town’s elderly citizens can remember going to the well as children and collecting bottles of the water in order to store it away for future use.
There is on street parking nearby but it is a residential area. Instead, why not park in the town car park and follow the footpath through the walk way at the top corner of the long stay car park, cross over West Street and proceed under the archway along Church Path. You can pick up the info for the Church Mirco on the way too.
