Church at Þykkvabæjarklaustur
The present church at Þykkvabæjarklaustur was built from driftwood in 1864. Its altar is considered sacred, as it has been in the same spot since the introduction of Christianity. The church bell was one of the loudest on the country. It weighed about 120 kilograms and could be heard across Myrdalssandur if the weather was calm. It was eventually lent to Hólmasel church in Medalland and was covered by the Laki lava flow in 1783 along with the church and everything in it.
Völva's grave
Völvas were fortune tellers who could also be skilled in magic. Their burial mounds usually have some magical properties, and the one that is found here close by the church is no exception. It is said that those who disturb it will bring misfortune upon themselves or their loved ones, so it's best to be careful.
