Geocache Description:

Number 530 in a series of caches where a red telephone box is in close proximity to a post box. The only rules are that they have to be able to be photographed together, be not more than 100’ apart and the phone boxes have to be red.

We were inspired to set a cache in this lovely area of the Derwent Valley.  An opportunity arose on a walk out towards Derwent Edge when we discovered these two in what remains of the drowned village of Derwent.  We would go so far to say that there is not a Pair in such a Finer location in the UK.  It is not a drive-by and the majority of traffic are walkers with occasional local vehicles. The cache is a straightforward multi which requires some research of Victoria’s great great grandson * (see below) whose name appears on the postbox. This will give you the final cache co-ordinates.

Sadly this Fine Pair like others in the series is not in tip-top condition and could do with a lick of red paint. Yet Postman Pat makes a regular collection for the small community as he speeds up the road to Fairholmes crossing the bridge by Derwent Dam.  Being in the country the phone box is occupied. Young cachers can watch out for Boris the Spider, the Hungry caterpillar, Wriggly Worm and others.

  • The year he became King = ABCD

  • The year he died= EFGH

Substitute numbers for letters in the final which is at :-    N 53° 24 (A-E) (C-H) B     W 001°44.H (B-G) (H+E+A)

Free parking can be found at N53° 23.884 W 001° 44.497 or fee-paying at Fairholmes Visitor centre.
