Esta Earthcache vai levar os geocachers ao lugar de Aldeia Nova para visitar uma rocha granítica onde é possível observar um fenómeno geológico conhecido como Tafoni.

This Earthcache will take the geocachers to the place of Aldeia Nova to visit a granite rock where it is possible to observe a geological phenomenon known as Tafoni.

Os Tafoni são cavidades rochosas naturais, elipsoidais, em forma de taça. Estas características cavernosas incluem poços minúsculos, cavidades do tamanho de bolas de ténis, cavernas de grandes dimensões, e formas de favos de mel aninhados e de forma oval. Desenvolvem-se tipicamente em superfícies inclinadas ou verticais, e ocorrem em grupos. Estas requintadas e fascinantes cavidades estão presentes nas superfícies de muitos tipos diferentes de rochas localizadas numa grande diversidade de regiões geográficas em todo o mundo. Desde os finais do século XIX, mais de 100 artigos de investigação sobre este tópico geomorfológico foram publicados em várias línguas, no entanto o seu desenvolvimento e evolução é intrigante e continua a despertar a curiosidade.
As características dos tafoni constituem uma classe de cavidades rochosas naturais relativamente profundas, arredondadas a alongadas que são escavadas principalmente por processos de meteorização rochosa e, secundariamente, por processos erosivos.

Tafoni are ellipsoidal, pan- to bowl-shaped, natural rock cavities. These cavernous weathering features include tiny pits, softball-sized cavities, truck-sized caves, and nested and cellular honeycomb forms. Tafoni typically develop on inclined or vertical surfaces and occur in groups. These exquisite and fascinating cavernous weathering landforms are present on the surfaces of many different kinds of rocks located in a multitude of geographic regions around the world. Since the late 1800s, more than 100 research articles have been published in numerous languages on this geomorphic topic. Tafoni development and evolution is puzzling and continues to arouse curiosity.
Tafoni-like features comprise a class of relatively deep, rounded to elongated natural rock cavities bored primarily by rock weathering processes and secondarily by erosional processes.

| Ainda não é muito bem compreendida a sua origem. Existe, no entanto, algum consenso que resultam da meteorização inicial ao longo das juntas, fracturas ou outras linhas mais frágeis, especialmente nas zonas onde a água pode residir. Pensa-se que as depressões vão sendo alargadas através da progressiva descamação das superfícies interiores e a sua desintegração granular, provavelmente como resultado da cristalização do material salino dissolvido a partir da rocha, transportado pelo vento para a rocha, ou pelo salpico sobre a rocha por água do mar. O processo de endurecimento da superfície externa é comum, mas as paredes que se vão separando das cavidades não são alteradas. Provavelmente o material descamado das cavidades acaba por ser removido pelo vento. |

The origin of tafoni is not well understood. The consensus is that they result from weathering initiated along joints, fractures, and other lines of weakness, especially those where water can reside. The hollows are thought to be enlarged by progressive flaking of the interior surfaces and their granular disintegration, probably as a result of crystallization of saline material dissolved from the rock, carried to the rock by wind, or splashed on the rock by sea water. Case hardening of the outer surfaces is common, but the walls separating the cavities are not altered. Wind probably removes loosened material from the cavities. |

- Qual a altura da rocha onde se encontra o Tafoni?
- Utilizando os pontos cardeais (Norte, Sul, ...) indica qual a face da rocha onde é possível observar o Tafoni?
- Em algum ponto o Tafoni furou a rocha atravessando-a de um lado ao outro?

In order to make the Found of this Erathcache you have to visit the Tafoni on the coordinates of the cache and we send us an e-mail via our profile with the following:
- What is the height of the rock where the Tafoni is?
- Using the cardinal points (North, South, ...) tell us the face of the rock where it is possible to observe the Tafoni?
- At some point did the Tafoni pierce the rock from side to side?
