Geocache Description:

About SideTracked Caches

This cache belongs to the SideTracked series. It is not designed to take you to a magical place with a breath taking view. Its a distraction for the weary traveller, but anyone else can go and find it too. More Information can be found at the SideTracked Website

This cache also qualifies for the Disappearing RR Blues bonus cache. This series highlights the railways of NW Oregon

About Eugene Train Station(s)

There are 3 station buildings near this cache. The active Amtrak Eugene Passenger Station. The old Freight Station, then the old depot for the Oregon Electric Interurban (And yes, streetcars used to run along nearby Willamette Street). This was the transportation hub for Eugene.

The current Amtrak station was built in 1908 by the Southern Pacific Railroad. It is a classic SP design and larger than many as Eugene was, and it is a major stop on the line. One can still board trains here for San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland, and Seattle. The Coast Starlight and the Cascades train stop here daily.

The freight/Express building was also built by the Southern Pacific, although I'm not sure if it was built at the same time as the passenger station or earlier. However, it is of a typical SP design as well.

The Oregon Electric Depot is not along railroad tracks, at least not anymore. It was built by the Oregon Electric Railway in 1914. The OE ran electric trains from Eugene to Portland via Albany and Salem. The tracks were right in the middle of 5th Avenue. Passenger service ended in 1933. Freight continued for some time afterward. Much of the OE line is still intact from West Eugene to Tigard as part of the Portland & Western freight Railroad. The OE station here has been loving restored by its current business
