Une mare est une étendue d’eau de faible profondeur dont toutes les couches aquatiques sont soumises à l’action du rayonnement solaire.
. Alimentée par les eaux de pluie, le ruissellement ou par les nappes phréatiques, elle peut être d’origine naturelle mais a le plus souvent été créée par l’homme. Le sol et la végétation présentent des caractéristiques qui témoignent de la présence d’eau au moins une partie de l’année. 
Les mares forestières.
Par définition, ces mares sont entourées d’une strate arborescente développée et pouvant recouvrir tout ou partie de la mare. Ainsi, la surface de l’eau se trouve majoritairement à l’abri des rayonnements solaires nécessaires au développement de la végétation aquatique, qui de ce fait est généralement peu abondante. Peu de végétation aquatique signifie aussi une faible concentration en oxygène dissous issue de la photosynthèse. Cette faible concentration en oxygène limite les processus de dégradation des feuilles et autres débris végétaux qui s’accumulent progressivement au fond de la mare. Dans certains cas, une mare peut se transformer en tourbière...

A pond is an area of shallow water where all the aquatic layers are subjected to the action of solar radiation.
. Fueled by rainwater, runoff or groundwater, it can be of natural origin but has been most often created by man. Soil and vegetation have characteristics that indicate the presence of water at least part of the year.
Forest ponds.
By definition, these ponds are surrounded by a developed tree stratum that can cover all or part of the pool. Thus, the surface of the water is predominantly sheltered from the solar radiation necessary for the development of aquatic vegetation, which is therefore generally scarce. Low aquatic vegetation also means a low concentration of dissolved oxygen from photosynthesis. This low oxygen concentration limits the processes of degradation of leaves and other plant debris that accumulate progressively at the bottom of the pond. In some cases, a pond can become a bog ...
