Gloom Strip Batavia/Kwelstrook Batavia
In this region water pops up to the surface(Seepage). Seepage occurs because the water in the IJsselmeer/Markermeer higher than the water in Flevoland. In some places the groundwater comes to the surface. This is called gloom.
Because the IJsselmeer used to be the Zuiderzee, it is broke water, a little salt. Halophilous plants get a chance to start growing, such as Sea-aster and Marsh Endive. Thanks to the combination with sweeter water spots (by rain) and drier, higher places in this area a large variety of plants and animals can excist.
Butterflies and dragonflies
Butterflies and dragonflies are mainly engaged in sunny and hot weather. Most butterflies can be seen on flowery places. When it is colder they look for sheltered spots, for example in trees and bushes. Dragonflies are highly dependent on water and hunt for insects. By the alternation of dry, wet and soggy spots is the gloom strip is for the dragonflies very attractive.
