Mikołaj Kopernik (Nicolaus Copernicus; 1473-1543) - astronom, matematyk, ekonomista, lekarz, duchowny - wszechstronny człowiek Renesansu; największy i najbardziej znany torunianin. Kopernik był przede wszystkim astronomem (wprowadził do nauki nowożytnej teorię heliocentryczną), ale wsławił się też w związku z innymi dziedzinami nauki. Był renesansowym polihistorem, poza astronomią zajmował się również matematyką, prawem, ekonomią, strategią wojskową, astrologią, był także lekarzem oraz tłumaczem.
Teoria heliocentryczna była znana już w starożytności; jej twórcą był Arystrach z Samos (310? – 230 p.n.e.). Mikołaj Kopernik w swoim dziele "O obrotach sfer niebieskich" - "Dē revolutionibus orbium coelestium" wprowadził ideę systemu heliocentrycznego do nauki nowożytnej. W systemie heliocentrycznym to Słońce, a nie Ziemia, znajduje się w geometrycznym środku Wszechświata. Ziemia, podobnie jak pozostałe planety, okrąża Słońce, jednocześnie obracając się wokół własnej osi. Chociaż Kopernik inaczej przedstawił strukturę układu Słońce-Ziemia-planety, nie odrzucił on innego elementu starszego modelu: sfery gwiazd stałych. Teraz jednak sfera ta była nieruchoma. Słońce nie było dla niego jedną z gwiazd, a cały Wszechświat był przestrzennie skończony.
Rewolucja Kopernikowska w Kosmologii dała początek wątpliwościom, czy nauka i wiara są sojusznikami czy wrogami?... kwestia, która wciąż jest gorąco dyskutowana do dzisiaj.

He was a renaissance polyhist, but also an astronomer, mathematician, lawyer, economist, military strategist, astrology scholar and also a physician and translator.
Just 20 years after Martin Luther’s (1483-1546) protest and the Spanish conquest of the Aztecs, an astronomer in Poland, a contemporary of the Reformer, makes an extraordinary claim. It is not the Sun that moves around the Earth, but the Earth that moves around the Sun! The astronomer’s name is Nicolaus Copernicus. Copernicus' "On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres" - "Dē revolutionibus orbium coelestium" is the seminal work on the heliocentric theory, first published in 1543. Nicholas Copernicus introduced the idea of a heliocentric system for modern science. In the heliocentric system, it is the Sun, not the Earth, located in the geometrical centre of the Universe. The Earth, like all other planets, circles the Sun, while rotating about its axis. Although Copernicus has differently depicted the structure of the Sun-Earth-planet system, he did not reject another element of the older model: the sphere of fixed stars. Now, however, this sphere was still. The sun was not one of the stars for him, and the entire universe was spatially endless.
