Histoire :
- Fondé selon la tradition à la suite de trois songes qu’eût en l’an 708 saint-Aubert évêque d’Avranches, le Mont Saint-Michel fut, dès ses origines, un grand centre de pèlerinage.
- Avant l’an mil fut élevée l’église préromane.
- Au XIe siècle, l’église abbatiale romane fut fondée sur un ensemble de cryptes, au niveau de la pointe du rocher et les premiers bâtiments conventuels furent accolés à son mur nord.
- Au XIIe siècle, les bâtiments conventuels romans furent agrandis à l’ouest et au sud.
- Au XIIIe siècle, une  donation  du  roi  de  France  Philippe  Auguste  à  la  suite  de  la  conquête  de  la  Normandie,  permit d’entreprendre l’ensemble gothique de la Merveille : deux bâtiments de trois étages, couronnés par le cloître et le réfectoire.
- Au XIVe siècle, la  guerre  de  Cent  ans  rendit  nécessaire  la  protection  de  l’abbaye  par  un  ensemble  de  constructions militaires qui lui permit de résister à un siège de 30 ans.
- Au XVe siècle, le chœur gothique flamboyant remplaça le chœur roman de l’église abbatiale.
- Enfin, jusqu’au XVIIIe siècle, s’est poursuivie la construction des logis abbatiaux qui composent la façade sud de l’abbaye.
- Transformée  en  prison  de  la  Révolution  au  Second  Empire,  l’abbaye  est  confiée  en  1874  au  service  des  Monuments Historiques et ouverte au public tout au long de l’année. 

L’abbaye bénédictine abonde en merveilles architecturales édifiées dans les styles carolingien, roman et gothique flamboyant. Le niveau de la première marche de l'entrée de l'abbaye est de 50.30m au-dessus du niveau moyen de la mer. Le sol de l'église, du cloître et du réfectoire est à une altitude de 78.60 m, tandis que la flèche néogothique qui sert de piédestal à la statue de saint Michel fait 40 mètres de hauteur. La hauteur du dallage, de l'église à la pointe de l'épée de saint Michel, atteint 78.50 m, ce qui fait que le mont culmine à 157,10 m de hauteur.

Le circuit normal des visites comprend (dans l'ordre) :

• Le Niveau 1 : aumônerie (billetterie) ; Grand Degré extérieur (escalier de 200 marches qui donne accès à la cour du Châtelet. Sous l'arc surbaissé de son entrée s'engage l'escalier du Gouffre, menant à la Porterie ou salle des Gardes. Enfin, le Grand Degré intérieur étage ses 90 marches jusqu'au parvis de l'église au niveau 3) ;
• Le Niveau 3 : parvis (terrasse panoramique) ; église abbatiale ; cloître ; réfectoire ;
• Le Niveau 2 : salle des Hôtes ; crypte des Gros Piliers ; chapelle Saint-Martin ; ossuaire avec belvédère et roue d'écureuil ; galerie sud-nord ; promenoir des moines ; salle des Chevaliers ;

 The Mont Saint Michel Abbey  

History :
- Founded according to tradition following three dreams that in the year 708 Saint-Aubert Bishop of Avranches, Mont Saint-Michel was, from its origins, a great center of pilgrimage.

- Transformed into prison of the Revolution in the Second Empire, the abbey is entrusted in 1874 to the service of the Historical Monuments and open to the public throughout the year.

The Benedictine abbey abounds in architectural marvels built in the Carolingian, Romanesque and Flamboyant Gothic styles. The level of the first step of the entrance to the abbey is 50.30m above mean sea level.
