Informatie over de Vlooybergtoren

De Vlooybergtoren is een zwevende trap gemaakt uit roestvrij Cortenstaal, dit materiaal heeft een kleur die verwijst naar het ijzerzandsteen van de Diestiaanse heuvels. De zwevende trap, die 20 meter lang en 11 meter hoog is, bevindt zich op één van de hoogste plaatsen van het Hageland (80 meter). Hierdoor heb je vanop de Vlooybergtoren een uitzicht over heel het Hageland en ver daarbuiten. Zo kan je bij goed weer vanop de toren de koeltorens van Electrabel zien in Vilvoorde (in het westen) en de schachten van de Limburgse koolmijnen (in het oosten).
Naast een mooie uitkijktoren is de Vlooibergtoren een belangrijke ‘Landmark’ voor het Hageland (zichtbaar vanop de gewestweg Leuven-Diest) en versterkt hij de streek identiteit.
Het opvallende aan de Vlooybergtoren is dat de trap lijkt te zweven. Om dit mogelijk te maken moest de ontwerper ieder element berekenen. De leuning dient als voornaamste steunbalk om de Vlooybergtoren sterk genoeg te maken, bijgestaan door twee trillingdempers. De toren is gebouwd door het ingenieursbureau 'Close to Bone' die er in 2014 een staalbouwwedstrijd mee wonnen. Indertijd noemde de jury het een ‘stairway to heaven’.

Voor dat de Zwevende trap geplaatst is stond er op dezelfde plaats een houten uitkijktoren. Deze was echter niet bestand tegen vandalisme en het nodige stormweer waardoor er een vervanging moest worden gezocht, wat dan de Vlooybergtoren werd.

In het najaar van 2016 kwam de Vlooybergtoren uitgebreid in de media doordat de eindscène van de komische fictieserie 'Callboys' zich afspeelde op de toren.


Helaas heeft ook de Vlooybergtoren moeten lijden onder het vandalisme. Zo hebben vandalen tijdens de nacht van 29 op 30 juni 2018 brandgesticht op de toren wat geleid heeft tot een explosie. Hierdoor de toren zwaar beschadigd geraakt. De 5 dader van tussen de 18 en 37 uit het Hageland werden vrij snel geïdentificeerd waarna ze allemaal bekenden. Zij moeten zich nu verantwoorden voor de correctionele rechtbank. Na de vernieling was er al direct veel betrokkenheid van de omgeving en de 'Callboys', zo zou er een crowdfunding worden opgestart om de toren niet alleen te herstellen maar ook hoger te maken. Omdat dit echter een nieuwe bouwvergunning vraagt is het niet zover gekomen en wordt de toren gewoon in zijn oorspronkelijke staat herstelt. Er wordt verwacht dat de toren in oktober 2018 terug toegankelijk zal zijn.

Hoe log je deze Virtual Cache?
  • Tel het aantal treden van de Vlooybergtoren en mail ze naar vlooybergtoren@gmail.com
    Gewoon het aantal in (Arabische) cijfers en je Nickname (als onderwerp) volstaan. Als het klopt krijg je onmiddellijk een automatische bevestiging.

Information about the Vlooyberg Tower

The Vlooyberg Tower is a floating staircase made of stainless Cortensteel, a material from which the color refers to the iron sandstone of the Diestian hills. The floating staircase, which is 20 meters long and 11 meters high, is located at one of the highest places in the Hageland region (80 meters high). As a result, from the Vlooyberg Tower you have a view over all of Hageland and far beyond. For example, you can see the cooling towers of Electrabel in Vilvoorde in the west and the shafts of the Limburg coal mines in the east.
In addition to a beautiful lookout tower, the Vlooyberg Tower is an important landmark for Hageland (visible from the Leuven-Diest region) and it reinforces its regional identity.
The striking feature of the Vlooybergtoren is that the staircase seems to float. To make this possible, the designer had to calculate each element. The handrail serves as the main support bar, assisted by two vibration dampers. The tower was built by the engineering firm 'Close to Bone', which won a steel construction contest in 2014 with the tower. At that time the jury called it a 'stairway to heaven'.
Before the floating staircase was placed there was a wooden lookout tower in the same place. However, it did not withstand vandalism and the present storm weather, so a replacement was needed and the idea of the Vlooyberg Tower was born.

In the fall of 2016, the Vlooyberg Tower was expanded in the media because the final scene of the Belgian comical serie 'Callboys' took place on the tower.

Unfortunately, the Vlooyberg tower also suffered from vandalism. Vandals made a fire on the tower during the night of June 29 to June 30, 2018, which led to an explosion. This caused the tower to be badly damaged. The 5 perpetrators from the Hageland were identified fairly quickly after which they all confessed. After the destruction there was immediately a lot of involvement of the inhabitans and the 'Callboys', a crowdfunding would be started to not only restore the tower but also make it higher. However, because this requires a new building permit, it did not come to that point and the tower is simply restored to its original state. It is expected that the tower will be accessible again in October 2018.

Information sur La tour de Vlooyberg

La tour de Vlooyberg est un escalier planant en acier inoxydable, une matière avec une couleur qui fait référence au grès de fer des collines de Diestian.
