Geocache Description:

This VIRTUAL CACHE will take you on a lovely walk along the Bow River in Canmore and will culminate at a Alberta Survey Control Marker (a brass cap) located above and to the west of the Rundle Power Station, at a spot with a great view of Canmore and the Bow Valley. The walk is less than 2 kms return with about 40 meters of elevation gain, most of which is gained when ascending the very long staircase beside the power station

To log this virtual cache you will have gather a bit of information along your walk. The walk starts from the parking area on the south side of the Bow River Bridge on the east side of the road (Pk) . Go under or around the bridge and head west along the Bow River on the paved pathway to the following spots.

S2 - a sign titled "A Living River". To claim a find e-mail or message me the two kinds of birds mentioned in the second paragraph.

S3 - a Memorial bench. To claim a find e-mail or message me who is being remembered.

Posted co-ordinates - After WP3 continue on to the Rundle Power Station, walk up the very long staircase (or parallel trail if the stairs are closed or too icy) and follow the trail towards the survey cap at the posted co-ordinates. It is set in a round cement base flush with the ground at the edge of a large juniper bush. The cap is 8 feet from a sign warning of a nearby undercut cliff (HEED THE SIGN). Email or message me the numbers on the "Brass Cap" as well as the word someone deeply scratched in the base.

I have used the virtual in this manner as the now archived Brass Cap Cache by Outforthehunt was one of my favorite caching activities, so this can be one more for kindred spirits. Van der Decken, the current keeper of the offsite BCP Stats, has kindly agreed to give it a BCP number and finders will get credit for the cap in that data base.

FOR THE RECORD

1. Stay away from the nearby undercut cliff.

2. In winter bring traction devices in case of icy conditions.

3. Using a compass as a metal detector may help you locate the cap under snow.

4. It is a good idea to carry bear spray in wooded areas of Canmore.

5. For more info on Aberta Survey Control Markers see GC72DVJ by van der Decken.

6. The ASCM is in an Alberta Provincial Park so please treat the area with respect.

7. Permission has been obtained for the location of this virtual cache from Alberta Parks.
