Rules for this puzzle: No intentional red herrings, no oddball (fishiness) methods of presenting coordinates (UTM, for example, or also having coordinates read backwards), and no leaving off the N32 and W97 just to make it more difficult. There may be more than one layer on this puzzle. Collaboration is allowed and you may ask me for hints after there has been a FTF.
Now for the puzzle...
There are lots of kinds of steganography. Many types require no special software - examples include stareograms, changing the color of words in a picture so that they are almost invisible, or hiding information in the Exif header data. There is also the kind that requires special steganographic software. I personally despise that type of steganography in puzzles. Not because it is challenging, but because, sometimes, it is implemented confusingly as a puzzle. Often it is lack of understanding in how steganography works. One key item COs may not realize is there are hundreds of stego programs out there and that you must use the exact same program to decrypt as encrypt. Thus, unfortunately, the solver bears the arduous task of trying to figure out which software program to use - and the solver many not realize that many of the programs available contain malware. It’s a nightmare of potential virus infection! Then, what is the password? Most of us certainly don't enjoy a game of "What's In My Pocket?". In addition, as per a discussion I just had with another cacher recently, most of us haven't had a lot of training on the various stego methods - which makes it even more difficult.
So, now I'll get off my soapbox and present to you my version of what I hope is "Stego Done Fairly and/or a Tutorial on Stego". The entire content of the puzzle is contained in the ocean picture below and not in the rant above. Let me know what you think!
P.S. I hope my rant would make this clear, but no need to download any random software to solve this puzzle. I made sure to use widely, and publicly, available methods that are done via web browsers or pre-installed desktop software. Be sure to look closely for the breadcrumbs (for starters, the web link above).
