Geocache Description:

The last two Mayfield Fort Historic Site CITO's were such a big success that we are returning for part 3. It has been a full year since we were here last, so it is anybody's guess what kind of mess we will find waiting for us when we arrive.

Mayfield Fort Historic Site preserves one of the few remaining portions of the Civil War fortifications built to protect the vital rail junction at Manassas, Virginia. Covering 11 acres, the Mayfield Fort site is located on high ground between Buckhall and Russia Branches. Both are tributaries to the Occoquan River and strategic point between them was an ideal place for a Confederate fortification.
CITO stands for Cache In Trash Out. It’s the geocacher’s approach to keeping our game board (i.e. the entire planet) in great shape. Geocachers gather together to pick up trash, remove invasive species, repair trails and more! Also all geocachers who participate in a CITO during this week will earn a pretty sweet new souvenir!

A Look Back at the September 2016 Mayfield Fort CITO II (GC6Q2BH)

"I came away smelling of beer and urine since I used the geotruck (TB5GXYB) to carry the stuff to the top of the hill and the bed of the truck was soaked with the anthropogenic fluids oozing from the cargo." - Nothereeither

"As always there were a few odd things: chair, clothes, charred and melted map of Wisconsin, half a shop vac, and an unopened can of beer (for some reason I couldn't find any takers for that last one)." - Nemo Consequentia

"Is there a better way to kick off the first weekend of fall then by walking a Civil War site, cleaning up the environment, and geocaching all at the same time?... Nope." - -Robfam

"It is surprising how many tires you can find in a place like this. " - Dminimax

A Look Back at the March 2016 Mayfield Fort CITO (GC6B5PW)

"Talk about beer bottles, I think we found more here than at a National's game." - Seadog129

"I didn't think that we would be pulling truck loads of stuff out of there today, but we sure did. And between mufflers, fire exthinguisher**s**, knive**s** (many), full tackle boxes, shopping carts and goodness knows what else, that park is sparkling like it never has before." - HooClass2002

"Awesnap finds all the nicest places for CITOs. While mine may entail some heavy lifting, his always look like they are being held on a landfill." - Dephogration

"Filled 5 huge trash bags, mostly filled with bottles and cans, three chairs, tire, blanket and cushion. " - EC-288-W
