Ce lac artificiel a été créé sur une tourbière en 1983. La nature ayant repris ses droits il faudra alors extraire la tourbe du lac. Le curage débute en 2003 pour se terminer en 2011.
Le lac est situé au cœur du bois de Gayme sur la commune de Picherande. Sa superficie avoisine 3 ha et sa profondeur est d’environ 10 m (au centre).
. Les coulées volcaniques ont été érodées par les glaciers du Massif du Sancy, et les moraines frontales ont créé des zones dépressionnaires qui se sont ensuite comblées de colluvions et de tourbe.

Un premier plan d’eau a été créé en 1980 sur la tourbière grâce à la construction d’une digue. Celle-ci permettait d’augmenter le volume d’eau du lac en contenant les eaux d’écoulement.
Suite au gonflement des niveaux tourbeux superficiels et au développement de la végétation (création d’une île) l’ouvrage a été vidé, puis le bassin a été creusé avec extraction de la tourbe.
Ce lieu fait partie d’un site à la fois aménagé mais où la nature a toute sa place. La zone proposée offre une impression d’intimité...
