Geocache Description:

The co-ordinates will bring you to the entrance of Prestwich Memorial and Visitor Centre, a place dedicated to the memory of 17th to 19th century slaves and marginalised people who helped build this city, and whose remains are re-interred on this site.

Kindly note the cache is on a display shelf inside these premises and therefore only available during the week from 07h00 to 17h00 and on weekends from 08h00 to 14h00.

The Prestwich Memorial and Visitor Centre provides an ossuary for the human remains uncovered during construction of various recent developments in the Green Point area. These 17th to 19th century underclasses - indigenous people, the poor, slaves and victims of shipwrecks - now have a dignified resting place as well as somewhere their story can be told, where visitors can honour their memory and where their part in our history can be commemorated.

The memorial is positioned to protect views of St Andrews Church and the nearby Lutheran Church complex. The Memorial Garden and stone walling are placed on the alignment of the historical cemetery while the Interpretive Centre is located on the historical site of the Dutch Reformed Church cemetery. A piece of the original cemetery wall even stands to the left of the entrance and adjoins the original alignment of Somerset Road where old horse-drawn trams once ran to Sea Point.

For more information about District One, please see below:

And perhaps if you are interested, embark on one of the two short (one hour) self-guided walks that will take you through the historic District One, the old burial grounds to the batteries of Table Bay and the Slave Route to Table Mountain.

While you sign the logsheet and trade some SWAG or TB's, please take a moment to reflect on how lucky you are to be here in this time where we have so much freedom compared to those less fortunate that came before us.

This cache also pays tribute to a geocache that was located here and first brought my attention to this place. The cache was called The Truth about Prestwich, with GC code GC2A1A5. Thank you Cape Geckos for placing the original cache, and I hope this is a worthy replacement.

The owner of the establishment has granted permission for this cache.
