Geocache Description:

St Chad, Welbourn

ST CHAD, WELBOURN

St Chad, Welbourn is a Grade I listed building, achieving the status on 23 August 1967.

The oldest part of the church, the tower, dates from C12th but it is believed this may have been part of an older structure dating from Saxon times and mentioned in the Doomsday Book. The church was added to in C13th, C14th and C15th before the chancel was re-built in 1854 and the whole church then undergoing renovation in 1884.

The tower shows four stages of building and is topped with a C14th octagonal crocketed spire.

The west door can be dated to C14th. Unusually, the rood stair is topped with a small octagonal spire.

The wooden pulpit and pews are from the 1884 restoration, as is the internal wooden roof.

The font, dating from C19th is octagonal, in-keeping with the spire and smaller spire on the rood stair.

The south porch is accessed via large wrought iron gates, dated 1908.

Really unusually, all the windows are plain glass except the east window which is stained glass.

The spire houses 8 bells. Some are from the decommissioned church at Hagworthingham.

St Chad is currently in the Loveden Deanery.
