St Martins Church West Drayton

A church has stood on this site since 1181 and the present Church still incorporates parts of that building although it was modified in the 13th Century. There are beautiful stained glass windows which are 19th Century and a 15th Century Font which is regularly used for baptisms. The clock on the tower is one of the oldest in Middlesex and came from the demolished Manor House in 1751. It was restored in 2010 and is now fully operational.

In 1546 William Paget was granted the old manor house by Henry VIII. It stood on the land behind the adjacent gatehouse. Besides the gatehouse the original brick wall can be seen running along Church Road. A number of the Pagets were buried upright in the crypt of St Marys.

The Lords of the Manor were the De Burgh family, and there are several monuments to them in the Church. They started with Fysh De Burgh, who was born Fysh Coppinger, a wealthy merchant of London, but took his wife’s name on purchasing the manor from Henry Paget, Earl of Uxbridge, in 1786.

Other items of interest inside the church include a great chest, apparently 16th or 17th Century, and a curious Eagle lectern of brass, looking rather ancient. A more recent addition is the pair of Burne-Jones windows to Daniel Mercer and his wife Martha, circa late 1870s

Turn around and look for the small plaque In Memory of the Deputy Church Warden;
