Window to Porto Moniz

A principal estrada que durante muitos anos serviu a ilha da Madeira (antes do surgimento das vias rápidas, túneis e vias expresso), foi a ER101 que rodeava quase toda a ilha, a tal estrada que surge em muitos dos postais do "antigamente" com os autocarros a passar bem rente das rochas e com o mar a servir de berma.

The main road that served the island of Madeira for many years (before the emergence of highways, tunnels and expressways) was the ER101 that surrounded most of the island, such a road that appears in many of the "old" postcards with the buses passing close to the rocks and with the sea to serve as a berm.
 

No entanto, alguns troços desta mesma estrada - principalmente a norte da ilha - revelavam-se perigosos devido à ação do mar nos dias de maior fúria, à queda de pedras que ameaçava viaturas e pessoas e o facto de só permitirem uma fila de trânsito em locais com abismos sobre o mar que obrigava a manobras de perícia aos condutores de viaturas ligeiras e pesadas.

Devido a isto, substituiram-se os percursos regados a maresia por paredes de betão conferindo maior velocidade, conforto e segurança aos automobilistas. No entanto, perdem-se muitas das vistas fantásticas que esta bela ilha nos oferece se o caminho escolhido for o mais recente... Alguns locais foram considerados demasiado perigosos para se manterem abertos, mas outros - como o que presenteia esta cache - mantêm-se como alternativa aos menos apressados.         

However, some sections of the same road - mainly on the north of the island - were dangerous due to the action of the sea in the days of greater fury, the fall of stones that threatened vehicles and people and the fact that they only allowed a single traffic queue in places with cliffs over the sea that forced maneuvers of expertise by the drivers of light and heavy vehicles.

Due to this, the routes bathed by the sea breeze were replaced by the concrete walls, giving greater speed, comfort and safety to drivers. However, many of the fantastic views that this beautiful island offers us are lost if the path chosen is the most recent ... Some places were considered too dangerous to remain open, but others - such as the one provided by this cache - is an alternative to the less rushed.

Num curto desvio entre a Ribeira da Janela e o Porto Moniz, na zona sobranceira a Estação Hidroelétrica, este antigo pedaço de estrada dá-nos a conhecer um belo miradouro entregue à ação do tempo e, talvez, do esquecimento...

In a short detour between Ribeira da Janela and Porto Moniz, in the area overlooking the Hydroelectric Station, this old piece of road gives us a beautiful lookout delivered to the action of time and, perhaps, forgetting ...
 

Se de alguma forma fosse possível aos geocachers escalar o ilhéu que se encontra na foz da ribeira, iriam encontrar uma abertura no mesmo, onde poderiam se recostar nesta Janela para o Porto Moniz...
