Vom Startpunkt bei N 54°15.630 E 010° 4.550 geht es weiter in Richtung der Landeshauptstadt. Diese ist auch Ausgangspunkt für die meistbefahrene künstliche Wasserstraße der Welt, den Nord-Ostseekanal.

Bereits im 7. Jahrhundert nutzten die Wikinger von Haithabu aus den schmalen Landweg zwischen Schlei und Treene um Waren auf kurzem Weg von Ostsee in Richtung Nordsee zu transportieren.

Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts übernahm der dänische König diese Idee und ließ den Eiderkanal von Kiel bis zur Einmündung in die Eider bei Rendsburg zu bauen.

Im 19. Jahrhundert spielten strategische Überlegungen des damaligen Kanzlers Otto von Bismarck zu einer Planung für einen Kanal der Nord- und Ostsee auch für die immer größer werdenden Kriegsschiffe der deutschen Marine nutzbar machen sollte.

Am 20. Juni 1895 wurde der damals Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal genannte Nord-Ostsee-Kanal durch Kaiser Wilhelm II eröffnet.
