Geocache Description:

THIS CACHE IS ONE OF THE CACHES PLACED IN THE SERIES
FOR THE ASHEBORO DOWNTOWN BUSINESS ASSOCIATION'S GEOTRAIL.

Asheboro Wall Murals:

Throughout downtown, brick exteriors have become the "canvas" of muralists, bearing by-gone scenes of life in Asheboro.

As you stroll along the streets in Asheboro and look at the murals, you will need to find some information at each mural to be able to find the cache at the end. Some of the information you need may need some simple math (ADD or MINUS) for final number.

The posted coords are for Mural 1.  Total walk to final is right at 1/2 mile. Total walk (back to car) is about 9/10 of a mile.
As you stroll, take in the ambiance of this quaint little city.

When Randolph County was organized in 1779, the town of Asheboro was founded and made the county seat. The name honors Samuel Ashe, governor of North Carolina at the time the town was incorporated in 1796. The original form was Asheborough, which was retained until 1923, when the Post Office changed it to "Asheboro."

Final Location = N 35 4 H. A V E  W 079 4 F. U N!

MURAL 1: "Randolph Memories" --  N 35° 42.350' W 79° 48.853'

P. H. Morris General Merchandise/Asheboro Telephone Co/The Emporium
A historic 1970s- era mural.
Artist: Cynvia Arthur (director), A. Beck, L. Culler
Susan Harrell refurbish the mural starting in March 1976 and it took 18 months.

This mural is painted along a whole block on Fayetteville Street.
It is 105 feet by 35 feet and they used more than 70 GALLONS of paint.

Many of the characters drawn were towns people who helped in some significant way. For example, the shop keeper sweeping was Dwight Holland, art teacher and artist, who was very active in the arts guild. (the arts guild facilitated this mural.) So back in the 70's, when it was painted, folks passing by might recognize the people, but as time goes on, most are dead now and that bit was lost with the redo.

H = Look for the cost of a shave and haircut at Carter's Barber Shop.
Use the first number.

Mural 6:   LONG wall mural - - N 35° 42.229' W 79° 49.033'

This wall is approximately 225 feet long.
The person responsible for the painting was
Corey Cagle, a local artist and art teacher.
She ran a summer art camp for the Arts Guild and
the kids are the ones who painted it under Corey's direction.

Walk along this wall and admire the art and think about the kids painting the wall.
Pretty AWESOME!
