A Levada do Norte foi construída entre 1947 e 1952. Com mais de 60km de extensão de canal principal, supria as necessidades de regadio de 1.400 hectares de terrenos de cultivo e garantia no processo a alimentação do aproveitamento hidroelétrico na Central da Serra de Água.
Aquando da sua inauguração, os mais altos dignitários do Estado Português deslocaram-se à Madeira para consagrar a abertura da Levada. Centenas de cidadãos apadrinharam os primeiros passos da água na Levada do Norte, percorrendo-a desde a Ribeira Brava até Câmara de Lobos, onde decorreu uma missa campal. Até então, e como comprovam relatos arrebatados da época, a Levada do Norte corporizava a mais complexa e morosa obra humana alguma vez realizada na Madeira.
O troço de levada entre a central Hidroelétrica da Serra de Água e a Ribeira da Ameixieira encontra-se inoperacional há alguns anos, após algumas derrocadas que afetaram a passagem da água. Este troço ficou agora conhecido como “Old Levada do Norte”.
Desde então, não corre água neste troço, e foi construído um túnel para passagem de água que liga estes dois locais.
As Caches:
Este conjunto de 4 caches encontram-se num troço da levada do Norte que já não está operacional (não passa água na levada) há alguns anos.
Tem atenção pois o percurso não tem proteções e apresenta algumas derrocadas da qual é possível passar pois já há percurso alternativo. Na Central Hidroelétrica e na Ribeira da Ameixieira há alguns locais de passagem proibida que estão deviamente identificados.
Recomendamos iniciar o percurso Junto a Central da Serra de Água e terminar na Ribeira da Ameixeira.
● Old Levada do Norte – Central Hidroelétrica: A cache encontra-se perto da Central Hidroelétrica da Serra de Água (ver spoiler).
● Old Levada do Norte – Cascata: Antes de chegar à cache é necessário fazer um desvio para fora da levada. A cache encontra-se junto a ribeira que apresenta uma bonita queda de água (ver spoiler).
● Old Levada do Norte – Túnel: O túnel tem uma extensão de cerca de 1km. O túnel apresenta alguma lama e algumas partes que pode ser necessário molhar os pés. A cache encontra-se sensivelmente a meio do túnel, no teto, por cima de um emparedado do lado oposto da levada (ver spoiler).
● Old Levada do Norte – Ribeira da Ameixieira: Se tiveres um veículo 4x4, esta cache fica bem perto do carro, caso contrário terás de deixar o carro mais abaixo onde termina a estrada de cimento. A cache encontra-se perto dos poços, em local perfeitamente acessível (ver spoiler).

The “Levada do Norte” was built between 1947 and 1952. With more than 60km of main channel extension, it supplied the irrigation needs of 1,400 hectares of cultivated land and guaranteed in the process the feeding of hydroelectric development in the Serra de Água Central.
At its inauguration, the highest dignitaries of the Portuguese State went to Madeira to celebrate the opening of this Levada. Hundreds of citizens patronized the first steps of the water in Levada do Norte, traveling from Ribeira Brava to Câmara de Lobos. Until then, as evidenced by storied accounts of the time, Levada do Norte embodied the most complex and time-consuming human work ever undertaken in Madeira.
The stretch of Levada between the Hydroelectric Power Station of Serra de Água and Ribeira da Ameixieira has been inoperative for some years, after a few landslides that affected the passage of the water. This section was now known as "Old Levada do Norte".
Since then, no water has flowed on this stretch, and a tunnel has been built for the passage of water connecting these two sites.
The Caches:
This set of 4 caches are in a section of the Levada do Norte that is no longer operational (there is no water in levada) some years ago.
Be careful because the course has no protections and features some overthrows from which it is possible to pass because there is an alternative route. In the Central Hydroelectric and in the Ribeira da Ameixieira there are some places of forbidden passage that are obviously identified.
We recommend starting the course next to the Serra da Água Central and finishing at Ribeira da Ameixeira.
● Old Levada do Norte – Central Hidroelétrica: The cache is close to the Hydroelectric Power Station of Serra de Água, (see spoiler).
● Old Levada do Norte - Cascata: Before reaching the cache it is necessary to make a detour out of the levada. The cache is next to the stream that presents a beautiful waterfall (see spoiler).
● Old Levada do Norte – Túnel: The tunnel has an extension of about 1km. The tunnel features some mud and some parts that may need to wet your feet. The cache is substantially in the middle of the tunnel, on the ceiling, above a set of stones on the opposite side of the levada (see spoiler).
● Old Levada do Norte - Ribeira da Ameixieira: If you have a 4x4 vehicle, this cache is very close to the car, otherwise you will have to leave the car further down where the cement road ends. The cache is near the wells, in a perfectly accessible place (see spoiler).
