Lanner Wesleyan Church

Lanner Wesley Chapel was originally built in 1828 at an estimated cost of £300 and at that time, Lanner was an insignificant minor settlement.
Lanner Wesley had been on the circuit plan long before the building took place in 1828, so a meeting place or Chapel of some description definitely existed nearby before this date.

The building was enlarged in 1844 to accommodate the ever increasing population, resulting from the growth of mining in the area. Thus altering the original Chapel beyond recognition.
All the carpentry work was done by Henry Strick of Trevarth - Carpenter and Undertaker. He made and glazed the windows for a sum of £36 and was paid a further £97 for fixing the inside gallery. Various members of the congregation helped in the building of the Chapel, raising and carrying moorstone from Carn Marth and conveying sand by cart from St Agnes.
Everybody who in any way contributed in the task was paid, even the children who cleaned the Chapel before the opening service.
The work cost a total of £681.11s. 8d, and £82 towards this was raised at the opening ceremony.

Front of Chapel after the 1844 rebuild.

In 1903, the front of the Chapel was altered again, this time to harmonise with the building of the Sunday School across the road. The new Gothic front of Granite and Bath stone was constructed at a cost of about £350, the whole of the amount was met by Mr James Davey, a butcher, formerly of Tocopilla in Chile. He also promised to provide Iron railings for the Chapel front, costing over £60.
In total, James Davey gifted an amount of about £500 in total, which in today's money ( 2001) was equivalent to £165,000.
His sister, Mrs Knuckey, who had also lived in Chile, gave £400 towards the building of the Sunday School opposite. These were huge amounts of money for a person to give, and this reflected on the wealth of the village due to the local mining. Tresavean mine was one of the most successful Copper mines in the county.

The whole of the Chapel interior was redecorated at a cost of £850, making it one of the handsomest buildings in the neighborhood.
In 1934, all of the six Lanner Chapels joined into one - Wesley Chapel, Primitive Chapel, Bible Chapel, Carn Marth Chapel, South Downs Chapel and Trevarth Chapel - and then Lanner Wesley was re-named Lanner Methodist Church, as it is today.

Inside of the church - 2017.

In 1991 - 20th July - saw the marriage of Mr & Mrs Redruth Roamers. So this place is quite special to us!

Sadly, as from 2022, the Church has been sold and is now used for a different purpose.(Auctioneers).

The Sunday-school rooms to the right of the Church is now being used for the Sunday services and any other Church goings.
