Metamorfismo/Metamorphism
Metamorfismo é a mudança dos minerais ou da textura geológica nas rochas pré-existentes, sem que estas se transformem em magma líquido.
A alteração ocorre principalmente devido ao calor, pressão e à introdução de fluídos quimicamente ativos. Os componentes químicos e estruturas de cristal dos minerais que compõem a rocha podem mudar mesmo que a rocha permaneça no estado sólido.
O calor provoca a quebra das ligações atómicas e os átomos movem-se e formam novas ligações com outros átomos, criando novos minerais com diferentes composições químicas e estruturas cristalinas, ou permitindo a recristalização.
Metamorphism is the change of minerals or geologic texture in pre-existing rocks, without melting into liquid magma.
The change occurs primarily due to heat, pressure, and the introduction of chemically active fluids. The chemical components and crystal structures of the minerals making up the rock may change even though the rock remains a solid.
Heat causes atomic bonds to break, and the atoms move and form new bonds with other atoms, creating new minerals with different chemical components and crystalline structures, or enabling recrystallization.
Tipos de Metamorfismo/Metamorphism Types
- Metamorfismo de contacto - Resulta da intrusão do magma a alta temperatura nas rochas pré-existentes. Pode incidir sobre rochas sedimentares, metamórficas ou magmáticas. As elevadas temperaturas e fluídos libertados pelo magma metamorfizam a rocha circundante alterando a sua composição.
A orla das rochas alteradas em torno do magma designa-se por auréola. Pode ir de alguns centímetros a centenas de metros dependendo da temperatura, da presença de água e fluídos e da rocha pré-existente.
- Contact Metamorphism - Results from high temperature magma intrusion into pre-existing rocks. Can affect sedimentary, metamorphic or magmatic rocks. The high temperatures and fluids released by the magma metamorphise the surrounding rock by changing its composition.
The border of the rocks altered around the magma is designated by aureole. Can vary from a few centimeters to several hundred meters depending on the temperature, the presence of water and fluids, and the pre-existing rock.

- Metamorfismo regional - É provocado por temperaturas e tensões moderadas a elevadas, e pela circulação de fluidos. Afecta extensas regiões da crosta terrestre, geralmente em áreas de actividade tectónica onde se formam montanhas, ou seja, zona de colisão entre duas placas continentais ou oceânicas.
Estas montanhas são depois afetadas pela erosão expondo as rochas intensamente deformadas dos seus núcleos. As rochas caracterizam-se por sucessivas fases de recristalização e de deformação devido à acção combinada e crescente das condições de temperatura e tensão.
- Regional Metamorphism - Is caused by moderate to high temperatures and tensions, and by the circulation of fluids. Affects extensive regions of the Earth's crust, generally in areas of tectonic activity where mountains form, for example, zones of collision between two continental or oceanic plates.
These mountains are then affected by erosion exposing the intensely deformed rocks of their cores. The rocks are characterized by successive phases of recrystallization and deformation due to the combined and increasing action of temperature and tension conditions.

A EarthCache
Esta EarthCache está situada no Poço do Inferno, em pleno Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela. A ribeira de Leandres, ao passar do maciço granítico de Seia para o maciço granítico de Manteigas encontra uma barreira de rochas metamórficas mais resistentes (corneanas) provocando uma sucessão de cascatas com vários metros de altura.
This EarthCache is located in Poço do Inferno, in the middle of Serra da Estrela Natural Park. The Leandres river, when crossing from the granite massif of Seia to the granite massif of Manteigas encounters a barrier of more resistent metamorphic rocks (hornfels) and it causes a succession of cascades with several meters high.
