O Dönerstag teve início em 2007 quando geocachers alemães começaram a encontrar-se em restaurantes de Kebab, espalhados por toda a Alemanha e ao mesmo tempo. A tradição popularizou-se de tal forma que a Groundsepak decidiu celebrá-la.
Estes eventos especiais são realizados todos os anos a uma quinta-feira. Em alemão, isso faz do nome "Dönerstag" um trocadilho: A palavra alemã para quinta-feira é "Donnerstag." Kebab traduz a "Döner". Daí nome destes eventos.

The Dönerstag began in 2007 when German geocachers began to meet in Kebab restaurants, scattered all over Germany at the same time. The tradition became popular in such a way that Groundsepak decided to celebrate it.
These special events are held each year on a Thursday. In German, this makes the name "Dönerstag" a pun: The German word for Thursday is "Donnerstag." Kebab translates to "Döner". Hence the name of these events.
