Bien que physiquement séparés par la voie ferrée depuis le 19ème siècle, St Brice et Courcelles sont depuis toujours intimement liées, le hameau de Courcelles dépendant du village de St Brice. Du côté de St Brice, les fouilles archéologiques préalables à la réalisation de la ZAC du Mont Hermé dans les années 80 ont permis de dégager une nécropole mérovingienne avec des cercueils monolithiques en pierre (24 tombes fouillées, 44 squelettes). La datation permet de situer cette nécropole au 7ème siècle. La toponymie du lieu évoque Hermès, le dieu grec protecteur des voyageurs. Saint Brice apparaît dès 1090 sous le nom de Saint Bri. L’église romane édifiée au 12ème siècle était dédiée à Brice, évêque de Tours, et a donné son nom au village. Saint Brice apparaît nommé en 1303 comme dépendant du Chapitre de la Cathédrale de Reims, donc des terres de l'archevêque. La commune a souffert des deux guerres mondiales et en 1944 le dernier train en partance vers Dachau s’y est arrêté. Après la seconde guerre mondiale, le maraîchage, activité principale de la commune évolue jusqu'à quasiment disparaître au 21ème siècle, seuls restent les jardins familiaux. L’eau de la Vesle, alors limpide, permettait l’exercice de métiers aujourd’hui disparus comme la blanchisserie, la filature, la teinturerie, la meunerie.

[ENG] Although physically separated by the railway since the 19th century, St Brice and Courcelles have always been closely linked, the hamlet of Courcelles depends on the village of St Brice. The town suffered from the two World Wars and in 1944 the last train to Dachau stopped there. After the Second World War, market gardening, the main activity of the commune evolves until almost disappearing in the 21st century, only the family gardens remain. The water of the Vesle, then limpid, allowed the exercise of trades today disappeared like laundry, spinning, dyeing, milling.
