Earthcache (near) Edinburgh on Earthcache Day

Earthcache Day 2017 - an event to have some refreshments, learn about the local geology from experts, and you can go on to enjoy a walk along the beautiful shoreline.

This event is part of the Earthcache Edinburgh weekend organised in conjunction with the Edinburgh Geological Society.

As part of the weekend events, there will be a bus leaving from central Edinburgh at 10am which will take in this event - your opportunity to take in the coastal cliffs, bays and beaches of East Lothian and the Borders with a guide from the Edinburgh Geological Society, stopping at a minimum of five earthcaches including the world famous Siccar Point. The bus will stop at this event as well. To book tour tickets at £15pp, click here. If you would like to come on the bus, YOU MUST BOOK.

The bus tour is expected to visit:
The Johnny Moat Stone - a glacial erratic on the beach, learn about its place in geological history as well as the links to the town in folklore (and the part played by a local geocacher in its recent story).
Dunbar cliffs - marvel at the power of the sea at the cliffs - view examples of coastal erosion, sea stacks and wave-cut platforms.
The Geology of Dunbar - observe how the rock types in the area have influenced the settlement and use of the area.
Barns Ness - spot fossil corals and sponges on the shoreline, as well as traces of tree roots, coal measures and limestone.
Siccar Point - a site of worldwide geological pilgrimage, where James Hutton noted an unconformity in 1788.
Romer's Gap - a location of fossil finds from the elusive 20 million years when animals came out of water on to the land.

Earlier in the earthcaching weekend, there are events at
Friday 6 October - Hanover Street - 6:30pm-8pm - GC729N6 - Come for an introduction to Edinburgh's geology, ask questions, get ideas, earthcache chat...
Saturday 7 October - Holyrood Park - 11am-3pm - GC729KP - Base yourself here to explore the 8 earthcaches in and around Arthur's Seat, plus the multis, puzzles, trads and wherigo.
