About Deptford Station
Opened in 1836, Deptford station is reputedly the oldest railway station in London.
The Grade II listed Carriage ramp is the oldest railway structure in London. Completed in 1835, the ramp was built as a means for carriages to reach the station. The Victorian Arches below the ramp were originally used to store passengers’ carriages and horses. Later they became locomotive and carriage works and during the Second World War the arches were used as air raid shelters.
Today with the help of the Railway Heritage Trust, the Carriage ramp has been fully restored to allow pedestrians to reach the station and the Arches beneath have been transformed into Deptford Market Yard which has shops, cafes, restaurants and bars.
