Geocache Description:

In 1833 Colonel Sir Joshua Crompton who was then the owner of Kepwick estate set about building a railway which would connect black Hambleton moors to the Stockton and York turnpike (now known as the A19). The railway was 5km long and used horses to pull the wagons with quarried limestone down to the four limekilns which were near the Leake village. All that is left of Leake is the church and manor house. This little sandstone bridge was constructed at the same time.

In 1893 the mineral railway closed and the railway was abandoned. These days the bridge is only known to walkers who cross this bridge which holds a lot of character and history on their way to Nether Silton or to Kepwick. Many people do not know why this bridge is here so we thought it would be worthy of being the first little bridge of the little bridge series to be published in Yorkshire.

The Little Bridges series was started by Stanthews in 2009 to highlight small footbridges in remote parts of Wiltshire. Since then the series has been expanded by others all over the country and starting to spread fast, Damian from Winter Foxes has created and updates a list of cachers who has found 10 or more little bridges and can be found here, if you would like to add to the series, please contact Stan on stanthews@aol.com and he will give you a number for your bridge, to qualify, the bridge must be a foot bridge too small for vehicles, please make sure your title exactly matches “Little Bridges # xx then name” including spaces so it will get picked up and added to Damian’s list.
