O 25 de Abril, feriado nacional, também chamado de "Dia da Liberdade", foi o dia em aconteceu um golpe militar em Lisboa, Portugal, em 1974, que derrubou o regime ditadurial existente. O golpe militar foi organizado pelo Movimento das Forças Armadas (MFA), composto por militares que se opunham ao regime, tendo a população aderido favoravelmente e de forma imprevista. Este movimento levaria à queda do regime político existente e à retirada de Portugal das colónias africanas e posteriormente também de Timor Leste.
Quanto à denominação de "Revolução dos Cravos", isso deve-se aos poucos tiros necessários neste golpe militar, com a população nas ruas a manifestar o seu apoio às tropas celebrando o fim da ditadura e da guerra nas colônias, com a colocação de cravos nas armas e nos uniformes dos elementos do exército.
