Geocache Description:

A short multi-cache to the memory of Hitchin's bravest. Visit the WW1 memorial outside the Army Cadet Centre and then a plaque to Hitchin's only holder of the Victoria Cross. Collect the numbers and then head to Ground Zero not too far away.

There is a War Memorial in the centre of Hitchin beside St Mary's Church, but there is also one to be found outside the Army Cadet Centre on Bedford Road (A600). This one is dedicated to the fallen of the Great War between 1914 and 1919 (as indicated at the foot of the memorial).

Visit the memorial at the first waypoint and count the total number of corporals and lance corporals remembered on the stonework (A). Then make a note of the number of the Hertfordshire Regiment Company (1st Battalion) in which all the names served (B).

Move to the second waypoint and find a green plaque to the memory of Frank Young. Note his lieutenant rank (C) and the battalion number he served in (D). Finally, record his tragically young age when he died (2E).

Using the numbers for A to E you have noted down, substitute them into the following coordinates to find the cache.

North 51° 5A.BCA West 000° 1A.DEB

Please exercise stealth when retrieving and replacing the cache. This is a busy area. If questioned by a passer by then please explain about geocaching.
