Geocache Description:

A simple offset cache
Saint Mark's C of E Parish Church was built 1877 - 1882 by J W Cocking and Sons, the cost funded by endowments from wealthy local woollen mill owners. The distinctive tower was added in 1914.

It is Grade II listed, for the following reasons:

The church is a well-designed, Gothic-Revival building retaining original character and detail and picturesquely conceived overall. It has a range of early C20 fittings of consistent quality. The church is on a prominent hill-side site in Longwood and is a good example of how C19 churches were carefully sited to occupy commanding positions in the townscape.

Assymetric in design, the church was built from coursed, squared sandstone. The steep roofs are of Westmorland graded slate tiles, on corbel tables, with coped gables. Of particular note are the lovely wrought iron arch over the entrance to the church grounds, the fine stained glass windows (one 1878 in memory of George Herbert Sykes, another 1900 in memory of Crossland Hirst) and the wall-mounted sundial. A pillar from the earlier church is displayed in the grounds. There are 550 sittings. The register dates from 1797. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £208 including 16 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Vicar of Huddersfield.

The cache is not at the listed co-ordinates, which are for the church. Limited parking is in the church grounds for the disabled and both places you need to visit have a flattish footpath. The final is a short walk away, or can be done with care as a cache and dash and can be found at North 53 MN.OPQ West 001 RS.TUV

First you will need to walk around the church and find the large wall-mounted sundial. Beneath this is a stone plaque about its restoration. There are two dates, which will give you ABCD - EFGH.

Next you need to exit the church grounds via the large gates with the wrought iron archway and cross the road to the small graveyard. Please take care here as the stone setts can be slippery in bad weather and cars use this road. In the graveyard you are looking for a very tall stone pillar, with an information stone leaning against it. You need the first date mentioned, to get IJKL. [tip - the last digit is not a zero!]

I have added the waypoints for the Amphitheatre and Nab End Tower, home of the annual September 'Longwood Sing', with which the church is associated.

Oh look, someone has thoughtfully left a bench for you to sit on and work out the puzzle!

M = (G + J) / D
N = G x E
O = H - I
P = K
Q = J + A
R = B - C
S = F - B
T = K - C
U = A x C
V = K - A

You can validate your puzzle solution with certitude.
