ST GERMAIN, THURLBY
St Germain, Thurlby is a Grade II* listed building, achieving the status on 23 August 1967. Also in the churchyard is a scheduled ancient monument. The monument is a cross and can be seen at the rear of the church.
There has been a church on this site since 1136. The earliest features that remain today are the C12th doorway and the C13th north arcade and west tower.
The church was mainly built from rubble, presumably from buildings in the area at the time. It was heavily restored in the 1800s.
Inside is a fine example of a C15th octagonal font. St Germain's also has C19th rood screen, wooden pulpit and pews.
Several memorials in the church commemorate the Bromhead family, who were the Baronets of Thurlby Hall.
There are 29 WWII Commonwealth War Graves in the churchyard as well as 25 Peace Time War Graves. This is due to nearby RAF Swinderby (1939-1995) being in the parish of Thurlby.
The first composting toilet in the Diocese of Lincoln is also behind the church!
St Germain is in the Withamside United parish of churches along with 5 other churches.
