Geocache Description:

Enjoy a walk through the lovely Red River Nature Reserve, and use the experience to learn a little about the area’s history and nature.

The Red River Nature Reserve is owned by Heanor and Loscoe Town Council, and is managed by Groundwork Derby and Derbyshire along with a volunteer group, the Friends of Red River. Thanks to all these for permission to place this geocache.

This is a multi-cache. The coordinates shown will take you to the entrance to the Red River nature reserve, and some information about it.

The total walk through the nature reserve can be done on made-up paths (there are other paths, which are less easy), and is just under 1 km there and back. The end location is by water, as you might expect with a Little Bridges cache, so please be careful. The entire route is along a wooded valley, so don't be surprised if your GPS gives the occasional spurious reading - the final coordinates have been checked several times, so should be okay.

This is a nature reserve, so please make sure that you leave nothing behind except footprints.

In order to identify the final location of the geocache, you will need to view the information panel and obtain the following numbers:

a = How many living creatures are shown on the information panel?

b = At its widest point, about how many metres is it across the site? b0.

c = When did the name “Red River” first appear? Around 179c.

d = In which year was the old Loscoe pit closed? 19d3.

e = There is a phone number for a Hotline in case of XXXX. How many letters are there in this word?

f = Approximately how many acres is the site?

The final location is at N 53° 01.abc W 001° 22.def

The cache is a small clip lock container. Small trackables will fit, but not a lot else. Please bring your own pen(cil).

Congratulations to ALFRETON DIVERS for FTF.

The Little Bridges series was started by Stanthews in 2009 to highlight small footbridges in remote parts of Wiltshire. Since then the series has been expanded by others all over the country and starting to spread fast, Damian from Winter Foxes has created and updates a list of cachers who has found 10 or more little bridges and can be found here, if you would like to add to the series, please contact Stan on stanthews@aol.com and he will give you a number for your bridge, to qualify, the bridge must be a foot bridge too small for vehicles, please make sure your title exactly matches “Little Bridges # xx then name” including spaces so it will get picked up and added to Damian’s list.
