Prvni neoficialni vlak prijel do Prahy 4. srpna 1845.

Tyto typy stanic byly budovany v 19.stoleti ve velkych evropskych mestech (Wien, Budapest, Berlin, Hamburg, Leipzig, Stuttgart, München, Zürich, Luzern, Paris, Roma, Venezia). Nadrazi melo dve casti. Prvni cast lezela pred prazskymi hradbami a slouzila pro odstavovani vagonu a lokomotiv. Byla zde take vytopna s vodarnou, dilny a sklady. K tem slouzila prijezdova budova u krizovatky ulic Na Florenci a Havlickovy. Byla zde pokladna potravni dane, kancelare pasoveho uradu, policie a financni straze.

Construction

Masaryk Station is the first railway station built within historical territory of the city (Dejvice Station of former horse-drawn railway from Lany being older, but located outside pre-1922 city limits, in suburb of Dejvice). The station was conceived as a terminus of a main line connecting Vienna and Prague via Olomouc. First test train arrived to Prague on August 4, 1845 and the ceremonial opening of the line took place on August 20. September 1 was the day when the line entered regular passenger service. The construction of the line advanced further to the north along the Vltava and the Elbe during following years. By June 1, 1850 railway reached Lovosice in northern Bohemia and the connection to Dresden in Saxony was completed on April 6, 1851.
At that time Prague was still a fortified city encircled with huge bastion walls from Baroque period and this obsolete relic had some influence on design of the station located on eastern edge of the city. On request of Austrian military authorities the station consisted of two parts - one half of the station (containing technical background like roundhouse, water tank, various workshops and warehouses) was built on outer side of the fortification and trains had to pass through six special gates (one for each track) to reach the second part of the station. At time of its construction this inner part consisted of two separate buildings stretching along both sides of tracks. The building on southern side (facing Hybernska Street) handled departures and contained ticket offices, waiting rooms of first, second and third class, restaurant and post office. The arrival buiding housing offices of octroi, police and financial guard was situated along northern side of the station (along Na Florenci Street).

Layout

Masaryk Station is a terminus station with bay platforms, which means there are no tracks through. This layout, common in grandiose 19th century stations in large European cities (e.g. Vienna, Budapest, Berlin, Hamburg, Leipzig, Stuttgart, Munich, Zurich, Lucerne, Paris, Rome, Venice), has an advantage of easy accessibility from busy urban streets; it also permits passengers to reach all the platforms and change from one platform to another without need to cross any tracks while maintaining the same level. As mentioned above, the main entrance for outbound traffic was from Hybernska Street in the beginning, but nowadays most people come directly to station hall from Havlickova Street, where a tram stop and exit of a metro station are located. Only original architecture facing the seemingly less important street in the south and ticket offices located in that wing remind us of a past.

Present

Masaryk Station a major commuter train hub for areas northwest and eastwest of Prague while international trains are handled by Main Station and Holešovice Station. Trains from Masaryk Station run to the following cities and towns: Kladno, Rakovnik, Kralupy nad Vltavou, Roudnice nad Labem, Lovosice, Usti nad Labem, Decin, Celakovice, Lysa nad Labem, Nymburk, Cesky Brod, Kolin or Pardubice.
