Louppy-sur-Loison, ou Louppy les deux châteaux
Surprenant exemple de style renaissance datant de 1620, le château de Louppy-sur-Loison est un édifice remarquable à ne pas manquer. À ses pieds, s’élèvent encore une tour et une courtine, vestiges du XIIe siècle de la forteresse défensive et résidentielle du comte de Bar Thiébaut 1er qui valut longtemps à ce village le nom de Louppy-les-deux-Châteaux.
Résidence du puissant gouverneur militaire de Stenay, Simon II de Pouilly, et de sa cour, le château renaissance aurait abrité Louis XIV pendant le siège de Montmédy en 1657.
La gardienne des lieux ne manquera pas de vous faire découvrir, lors de votre visite, la cour d’honneur et ses trois portails monumentaux richement sculptés, sa chapelle, son colombier restauré et vous invitera à flâner dans son parc à l’anglaise constitué d’essences rares.
Située hors des remparts de l’ancien château féodal, l’église de la Madeleine vaut également le détour : nef aux ouvertures romanes du XIe siècle, choeur voûté en ogive du XVIe siècle et chapelle funéraire de la famille du Comte de Vassinhac du XIXe siècle.

If you’re in this area, a visit to the castle at Louppy-sur-Loison is essential. This is an amazing example of the Renaissance style dating back to 1620 and is one of the most stunning buildings in our region. A tower and curtain wall still stand at the foot of the castle: these are the remains of another 12th century fortress and the home of Count Thiébaut de Bar I, giving the village its old name, Louppy-les-deux-Châteaux (referring to the two castles).
Home to the powerful military Governor of Stenay, Simon II de Pouilly and his court, the Renaissance castle was said to have been Louis XIV’s headquarters during the siege of Montmédy in 1657.
The curator will ensure you see the courtyard and its three lavishly carved gates, chapel and restored dovecote before inviting you to take a stroll in the English style gardens which contain several rare species.
Also worth visiting is the Eglise de la Madeleine which is situated outside the walls of the ancient feudal castle: the nave here has Romanesque arches dating back to the beginning of the 11th century, a vaulted choir with diagonal ribs from the 16th century and the 19th century chapel of rest for Count de Vassinhac’s family.
