Le lac Chauvet...
Le Lac Chauvet se situe sur la commune de Picherande occupant un cratère de maar basaltique qui est en partie comblé par des moraines glaciaires.
Il est bordé de "fayards" (arbres pouvant atteindre 200 ans).
Comme de nombreux autres lacs Auvergnats (?, ?, ? ,? ) il s’agit d’un maar, c’est-à-dire qu’il s’est formé dans le cratère d’un ancien volcan.
Ce lac est pratiquement circulaire: Superficie de 53 hectares, profondeur de 73 m, et diamètre de 600 m.

LE MYSTERE ???
Il demeure une énigme pour le géologue car les produits d’explosion du cratère n’ont pas été retrouvés.
Généralement, les projections volcaniques retombent pour partie à la périphérie du cratère, où elles forment un anneau ou un croissant. Une des originalités du lac Chauvet réside dans l’absence de ces produits d’explosion. On pense, qu’ils auraient pu être exportés par le glacier qui recouvrait la région à l’époque de l’éruption, il y a environ 15 000 ans.
Comme tous les lacs naturels, il évolue lentement vers le comblement, sous l’action conjointe de l’alluvionnement et de l’érosion des reliefs qui retiennent l’eau Son relief s’est érodé au cours du temps et il ne subsiste plus qu’un anneau de ? qui s’est formé au cours de l’éruption.
Ce lac de maar est en partie comblé par des moraines glaciaires auquelles on ajoute une bonne épaisseur de boue (? à ? mètres)..
