Byggnaden du nu befinner dig i närheten av är det kungliga slottet. Och det är den plats som historiskt har varit Sveriges regenters officiella bostad. Förutom för den nuvarande monarken som har valt Drottningholms slott som sin bostad.
Slottshistoriens 1:a del <1491
Redan på 900-talet fanns det här en pålspärr som skyddade inloppet till Mälaren. Ett försvar som på 1100-talet hade utvecklats till en försvarsborg. Denna byggdes sedan under 1200-talet ut till ett medeltida slott med ringmur och borggård.
1491 drabbades borgen med tillhörande arkiv av den första större branden.
Slottshistoriens 2:a del 1521>
Efter att Kalmarunionen hade brutits 1521 så påbörjades en förbättring av försvarsfunktionerna, bland annat en ny yttre försvarsmur. Även borgens inre renoverades och inreddes med nya saker.
1568 påbörjades nästa steg i utvecklingen som bestod av att göra om borgen till ett slott i renässansstil. Som bland annat bestod av en ny kungsvåning och en ny slottskyrka. Detta arbete avslutades 1588 i och med att tre gyllene kronor placerades på toppen av kärntornet. I och med detta kom slottet att kallas för "Tre Kronor"
Nu var allting frid och fröjd, i 9 år fram till 7 maj 1697. För då utbröt nämligen en stor slottsbrand som kom att totalförstöra allting utom den nyligen omgjorda norra slottsmuren.
Slottshistoriens 3:e del 1697>
Eftersom det redan före branden fanns planer på en större ombyggnation kunde ritningar på ett nytt slott visas redan några månader efter branden. Varvid arbetet med att riva allt utom den norra längan påbörjades.
Byggnationen av det nya slottet påbörjades snabbt och fortskred fram till 1709. För i och med nederlaget vid Poltava så avstannade allt arbete med slottet. Det var först efter att nya pengar avsatts av riksdagen 1727 som arbetet kunde återupptas.
Arbetet framskred nu i en betydligt lugnare takt, och det var först 1771 som Slottet ansågs vara helt klart. Sedan dess har inga större ombyggnationer gjorts. Utan det är mest anpassningar, moderniseringar och byte av inredning som har skett.

Castle history first part <1491
Already in the 900s, there was an pile block in the water to protected the entrance to Lake Mälaren. A defense which in the 1100s had evolved into a defensive stronghold. This was then extended in the 1200s to an medieval castle with an outer baily and an courtyard.
In 1491 the castle and its archives was partly destroyed by the first major fire in its history.
Castle history second part 1521>
After the Kalmar Union had been broken in 1521 began an improvement of the defense capabilities, including a new outer defensive wall. Even the interior was renovated and furnished with new things.
1568 began the next stage of development which consisted of converting the castle into a palace in the Renaissance style. Which included a new king bunk and a new castle church.. This work was completed in 1588 as the three golden crowns were placed on top of the main tower. With this castle came to be called "Three Crowns"
Now everything was fine for9 years until 7 May 1697. Then an large castle fire started that ended up destroy everything except the newly redesigned northern castle wall.
Castle history third part 1697>
Since there had existed plans for a major redevelopment blueprints of a new castle could be shown only a few months after the fire. Whereby the work to demolish everything except the north wing began.
The construction of the new castle started quickly and progressed until 1709. For after the defeat at Poltava all works on the castle was put to an halt. It was only after the new money had been allocated by Parliament in 1727 as the work could be resumed.
The work progressed now at a significantly slower pace, and it was not until 1771 that the castle was considered to be ready. Since then, no major renovations has been made. Except some adaptations, modernization's and replacement of the interior.
