Geocache Description:

La fontaine St-Laurent est une source etonnante. L eau qui provient en realite d'un puits artesien, amene de la fraicheur en ete;

------------ ENGLISH ---------------

The St. Lawrence fountain is an amazing source. The water that actually comes from an artesian well brings freshness in summer. An ancient sacred fountain, in 1832, an huge quantity of Roman coins has been found. The artesian well is a confined aquifer containing groundwater under positive pressure.

An artesian aquifer is confined between impermeable rocks or clay wich causes this positive pressure fluids mechanic). The recharging of aquifers happens when the water table at its recharge is at a higher elevation than the head of the well. (See figure)

A configuration between geology and topography needs to meet to create that particularity. If you look around, the town is surrounded by hills. The permeable layers are surmounted by clays (impermeable).

The water is clear and icy. The Pas-de-Calais is rich in artesian aquifer and artesian wells were named after the former province of Artois, where many artesian wells were drilled by Carthusian monk from 1126.
