The slate is a metamorphic rock which formed in strong conditions of pressure and temperature. It belongs to the family of the schists inside which it distinguishes itself by the quality of its grain, very fine, and it fissility.

Histoire:
L’ardoise de Corrèze (Travassac et Allassac) bénéficie d’une réputation de qualité sans égale due à sa structure géologique. Inaltérable, résistante à la flexion, parfaitement imperméable et résistante au choc-et donc à la grêle- l’ardoise de Corrèze garantie des toits plus que centenaires et est parfaitement adaptée aux bâtiments les plus anciens comme les plus modernes. Ces ardoises trônent aussi fièrement sur des édifices célèbres comme l’abbaye de Mont st Michel (ardoises de Travassac) ou l’église du Sacré-Cœur de Rodez (ardoises d’Allassac) que sur les toits des villages du Limousin et d'Auvergne.
Au début 2006, Allassac voit son riche passé ardoisier revivre avec la réouverture d’une carrière d’ardoise. Les ardoisières Bugeat réexploite l’ardoise sur le site historique des carrières, site connu depuis le XIIème siècle.
Il faut se rappeler que l’exploitation ardoisière a été durant plus d’un siècle le fleuron de l’économie allassacoise (400 ouvriers en 1914), marquant profondément l’architecture, le bâti, l’histoire de la cité. En sommeil depuis près de 30 années (la dernière exploitation s’était arrêtée en 1977), le site ardoisier a connu bien des aléas.
« A ciel ouvert », désormais la seule façon possible d’exploiter permettra d’extraire jusqu’à 1000 tonnes de pierres brutes par an. La production permet la fabrication d’une ardoise unique au monde. En effet l’ardoise d’Allassac, épaisse de 8 à 10 millimètres fournit le modèle baptisé «Tuile d’Auvergne ».
La qualité de ce schiste associée à sa renommée explique la forte utilisation de ce type d'ardoise dans toute l'Auvergne. Principalement vendues dans le Massif Central, les ardoises d’Allassac sont très demandées dans l’Aveyron et dans la Lozère. Le Cantal, la Corrèze et le Puy de Dôme restent encore de bons clients.
Hormis le noble matériau de toiture, véritable patrimoine du milieu allassacois, la carrière peut aussi fournir avec les « restes » des matériaux non utilisables pour la couverture une large gamme de produits : moellons de plaquage, dallages pour sols intérieurs et extérieurs, pierres à bâtir en vrac, linteaux, plaques de cheminées, plateaux de tables, etc.
La réouverture des ardoisières d'Allassac est aussi un vibrant hommage rendu à tous les « Piquet, Catala, Rip, Ded, Go, Ripette, Tiabet, Le Gros clos, Queuille, Toto » et bien d'autres « chaffres », surnoms donnés à tous les carriers, figures emblématiques d'une époque où la pierre était reine et qui ont, en leur temps, contribué à l'essor de la cité ardoisière.

History
The slate of the Corrèze (Travassac and Allassac) benefits from a quality reputation without equal due to its geologic structure.
