The west front of the church has an unusual brick turret which can be seen in the photos above and below, with its bell and clock.
Looking at the grey stone that the church is built from (with red brick dressings), it is easy to think that the architect (Charles Forster Hayward) may have re-used stone from an earlier Medieval chapel in its construction.
The ruins of this earlier chapel can be seen beyond the east end in the grounds at the back of the present church. The first record of a church at Reche (sic) was one founded in 1378 by Sir John Peksbridge. It was a perpetual chantry chapel dedicated to St. Etheldreda the Virgin, foundress and first Abbess of Ely probably on the site of an even earlier consecrated building.
