About Prestwick Town Station

Prestwick Station had a bumpy start. It opened on 5 August 1839 but had so few passengers at first that it closed again two months later! The station reopened in June 1841, then closed yet again after 6 months, only reopening permanently on 1 July 1846. With the opening of the station at Prestwick Airport it was renamed 'Prestwick Town' in 1994. These days it sees well over a third of a million passenger journeys each year.
The coming of the Irvine - Ayr railway led to Prestwick growing from a small village into a proud burgh with a number of fine Victorian villas. The purchase of land by the railway paid for the 'Freemen's Hall' to be built in 1844 opposite the hotel at Prestwick Cross where plans were made first in 1851 to open Prestwick Golf Course then to establish the prestigious Golf Open which began in Prestwick in 1860.
At the time of publishing this cache the station is staffed and has waiting rooms, toilets, a cafe and an automatic ticket machine.
