Geocache Description:

A straightforward multi based upon and not far from Phillack Chuch.

Roadside parking is usually available close to the church  on Lethlean Lane.

The Church

St Felicitas and St Piala's Church, Phillack was originally the parish church also of Hayle: it was built in the 15th century and rebuilt in 1856 by William White but the tower is original. It is part of the Godrevy Team Ministry. The font is probably not medieval; half a coped stone is in the churchyard.

Two early stones have been found embedded in the original village church. One bears a 'Constantine' form of a Chi-Rho cross which may date to the 5th century; it was afterwards rebuilt into the wall directly above the apex of the arch of the doorway of the new church. The second is simple memorial stone bearing the name of 'Clo[tualus] [son of] Mo[bra]ttus', dated between the fifth to eighth centuries, and now stands in the churchyard.Arthur G. Langdon (1896) recorded the existence of six stone crosses in the parish, including two in the churchyard.

The church is normally open during daylight hours. It has some nice stained glass windows.

In the Lady Chapel there are plaques on the walls commemorating the significant sacrifices made by the young men of the influential local Hockin Family. Young men of the family perished in a range of conflicts between 1840 and 1916.

The Cache

The headline coordinates will take you to a bench outside the South East corner of the church.

On this bench is a plaque with the following dates:

Mary Eliizabeth Jose - ABCA - CDDE

William Douglas Jose - ABCD - CDDE

The cache can be found at N 50 AA.(B-C)(B-A)D W 005 C(A+E).(C+E)(B-E)(B-A)

It is a plastic tube approz 10 cms long by 3 cms diameter under some small stones. No room for TBs I am afraid.

It is a short walk away from the church.

Please be STEALTHY at the GZ - it is a popular dog walking route - Please Bring Your Own Pen (BYOP)
