Geocache Description:

The cache is NOT hidden at the starting coordinates.

This is a letterbox hybrid cache. Letterboxing is another hobby in which people follow clues or a story (rather than just coordinates) to find a container and then put their personal stamp in the logbook and then stamp their own journal with the stamp from the cache.

A letterbox hybrid, like this one, is both a geocache and a letterbox. It can include both coordinates and clues to get you to the final location. Follow the instructions in the following paragraphs to be directed to the actual cache location. Contents include a stamp (do not take) and stamp pad for letterboxing, as well as a log book & swag for geocachers and letterboxers.

This cache will take you on an adventure .36 of a mile off trail from the main paved path (.49 overall from the parking coordinates), with a view of all of the best features of the park, including a creek, a bridge, twin ponds, "the fence," and a location that is rarely visited except by deer and rabbits.

Your Adventure Awaits

Recently I read something that a long-time geocacher wrote about geocaching, "Give us a cache in a neat area that's hidden from view." We agree, and you can't get much more hidden from view in this park than this. It's not that hard to find, and it's not even covered up much; it just takes a while to get there.

Start your journey at the parking coordinates on Brookfield Manor Court (N43 01.710 W88 07.061), where you'll see the sign for the entrance into the park.

From the sign, walk west on the paved path, past the twin yellow objects, and then over the bridge. Continue west on the path until you're about .13 from the park entrance. At this point you should see a bench dedicated to Thomas W. Belton, former director of Brookfield Parks & Recreation. Thomas loved nature, and for three decades as director he was instrumental in the development of many of the parks within the city of Brookfield. You may want to have a seat for a bit and appreciate the views facing you.

This is where you'll depart from the paved path. Take the worn path ("deer trail") that is S/SE and follow it for approximately 194 feet. Stop and enjoy the view here; you're situated exactly between the two ponds, one to the east and one to the west. A pretty cool part of Manor Park that is rarely seen by park users.

You'll now have to choose one of the two ways to continue: walk south and cross between the ponds (that's the best way, unless it's blocked by water), or take the longer way by backing up to the paved path, and going west to detour around the west pond. Both routes are described below.

Cross between the ponds (not often but at times a small stream will connect the two ponds together, which makes crossing particularly interesting) and go approximately 40 or so feet west, slightly around the west pond, until you see a deer path that goes up the hill. The beginning of the path is at about N43 01.642 W88 07.224. You don't really need to enter these coordinates or the rest of the coordinates listed here (just follow the directions), but they're presented here anyway for those who wish to enter them. By the way, if there IS high water between the two ponds (usually not) and you aren't inclined to cross there, you could back up and take the long bushwhack way around the west pond until you get to a wooden post at N43 01.635 W88 07.319, then make your way east about 335 feet until you catch up to the "fence" coordinates listed a few paragraphs below. There is a deer trail to follow there for most of the way from the post to the fence coordinates.

Take that path up the hill which starts S/SW, about 125 feet (until you get to N43 01.628 W88 07.245). Familiar sounds will grow increasingly louder as you walk up the short hill. On the way you'll walk past mostly small trees and some brush, as well as a few very tall dead skinny trees. Remember where you see those dead skinny trees; you can use them as a beacon to find your way back to the trail when you're done to avoid a bunch of unnecessary bushwhacking.

After taking the deer path 125 feet as mentioned before, the trail begins to swing to the west, but you'll leave the path at this point and head almost straight south through open spaces. You'll only need to travel about 60 feet south until you reach "the fence" at about N43 01.619 W88 07.247. We bet you haven't been HERE before.

Continue east along the fence until you come to a keyed padlock on the fence that is about three feet above ground. How far do you need to walk to get to the padlock? Let's just say if you walk 300 feet you've gone too far. It's less than that. And it's not tricky - it's simply a real padlock in plain sight. We want you to be able to spot it. The coordinates for the final, however, are located within 5 feet of that padlock. You're almost done!

When you find the coordinates, simply follow them to the cache, which as advertised contains a stamp and stamp pad for letterboxers and a log book and swag for both geocachers and letterboxers. And plenty of room for swag, if it isn't already stuffed with loot. Again, please don't take the stamp & stamp pad; they are to stay permanently in the cache.

We hope you enjoy your adventure along this lesser known area of the park!

About the Park
Brookfield Manor Park is a 31 acre wooded undeveloped park located in the central/southern portion of Brookfield. The site encompasses wetlands within a portion of the primary environmental corridor along Deer Creek and was dedicated to the city for parkland in 1985 as part of the plat for Brookfield Manor subdivision. The Deer Creek Trail (the paved path you were originally walking on), part of the Greenway Trail System, runs east-west through the park and connects to Ruby Park to the west.
