Pierre de Volvic
La pierre de Volvic est une roche volcanique qui fut très utilisée dans les constructions notamment dans les environs de Clermont-Ferrand et de Riom (Puy-de-Dôme - France). Elle a une couleur gris clair. Elle provient en très grande partie des mines et carrières proches de la commune de Volvic (Puy-de-Dôme).
Géologie
La pierre de Volvic est une trachy-andésite. Elle provient des coulées du Puy de la Nugère. Ce volcan a connu une volcanologie assez compliquée il y a 11 000 ans. Il a notamment vécu un épisode de type strombolien effusif qui a donné naissance à des coulées trachy-andésite d'où elle est extraite. C'est une pierre de couleur grise avec de nombreuses petites bulles et du feldspath. Elle résiste au gel, aux produits chimiques. Elle présente un faible coefficient de dilatation. Toutes ces caractéristiques en font un matériau intéressant pour la construction.
La pierre de Volvic, comme son nom l'indique, provient de carrières proches de la commune auvergnate de Volvic. Elle a probablement été exploitée depuis très longtemps. Son essor date de la construction de la cathédrale de Clermont-Ferrand au XIIIe siècle.
Elle a d'abord été exploitée dans des mines souterraines. Au XIXe siècle, l'exploitation se modifia et devint une exploitation à ciel ouvert ce qui permettait d'augmenter les quantités extraites. Au cours du XIXe et au XXe siècle l'exploitation s'est mécanisée. L'extraction de la pierre de Volvic employait 1 500 personnes entre les deux guerres mondiales. Elle a depuis fortement diminué.

Volvic stone The Volvic stone is a volcanic rock that was widely used in constructions especially in the area of Clermont-Ferrand and Riom (Puy-de-Dôme - France). It has a light gray color. It comes in very large part of mines and quarries near the town of Volvic (Puy-de-Dôme).
Geology
The Volvic stone is a trachy-andesite. It comes from the cast of the Puy Nugère. This volcano has had a rather complicated volcanology there are 11 000 years. He has lived a Strombolian effusive type of episode that spawned trachy-andesite flows from which it is extracted. It is a gray stone with many small bubbles and feldspar. It is resistant to frost, chemicals. It has a low coefficient of expansion. All these features make it an attractive material for construction.
The Volvic stone, as the name suggests, comes from nearby quarries of the Auvergne town of Volvic. She probably been exploited for a long time. Its development dates from the construction of the Cathedral of Clermont-Ferrand in the thirteenth century. It was first exploited in underground mines. In the nineteenth century the farm was modified and became an open pit which allowed to increase the amount extracted. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries operation was mechanized. Extraction of the stone of Volvic employed 1500 people between the two world wars. It has since fallen sharply.
