Das Eichhörnchen (Sciurus vulgaris), regional auch Eichkätzchen, Eichkatz(er)l, Eichkater oder niederdeutsch Katteker, ist ein Nagetier aus der Familie der Hörnchen (Sciuridae). Es ist der einzige natürlich in Mitteleuropa vorkommende Vertreter aus der Gattung der Eichhörnchen und wird zur Unterscheidung von anderen Arten wie dem Kaukasischen Eichhörnchen und dem in Europa eingebürgerten Grauhörnchen auch als Europäisches Eichhörnchen bezeichnet. Die typischen Lebensräume sind überwiegend Nadelwälder, sie sind aber auch in Laub- und Mischwäldern heimisch. Als Kulturfolger sind sie heute in Parks und Gärten häufig zu finden.

Due to this, without conservation the species could disappear from those shores within a generation. Unlike some other rodents, the Eurasian red squirrel is not a direct threat to humans. The red squirrel is found in both coniferous forest and temperate broadleaf woodlands.
