About Dolgarrog Station


Having grown up in the area Dolgarrog train station has always interested me, not least because it is in Maenan on the other side of the Conwy River from Dolgarrog!
The station was built by LNWR in 1916 to provide sidings and an interchange facility for a short standard gauge industrial line, built by the Aluminium Corporation to serve Dolgarrog village and their own aluminium works that were about a mile from the station on the west bank of the river. It is located just across the road from Plas Maenan which used to be the home of Henry Jack the managing director of the Aluminium Corporation from 1916 to 1927.
The line crossed the river by a substantial girder bridge (still in use as a footbridge today) and ferried passengers and cargo to the village from the main Conwy Valley Line. From 1917 until 1932 it was also the main way for workers to get to and from the works.
The works have since closed in 2002 and the site is now the home of Surf Snowdonia who have kindly given us permission to park in their free car park if you wish to walk the mile down the old route to the bridge. Parking is available at the station from the A470 at the mentioned waypoint if you fancy a quick cache and dash!
Dolgarrog is now an unstaffed halt and a request only stop. Please take care when crossing the tracks at the crossing, the cache is not placed within the station barriers or on any rail signage. The aforementioned bridge can be reached a little further up the footpath from GZ.
