About Conwy Valley Railway Station


Located in the beautiful village of Betws-y-Coed adjacent to the British Rail station Conwy Valley Railway is a real miniature gem. This has to be one of train mad Minipingus favourite places to be. We wanted to continue the Sidetracked series in his honour so thought this was a good place to start.
An extra bonus for all train fans is that just across the fence to view (or over the rail bridge to get to!) is the main Conwy Valley Line with regular trains to Llandudno or Bleanau Festiniog. Constructed by the London and North Western Railway with the primary aim of transporting dressed slate from the Blaenau Ffestiniog quarries to a specially built quay at Deganwy for export to sea.
The original plans envisaged a railhead at Betws-Y-Coed and a large goods yard was established with intended interchange to a proposed narrow gage line via the steeply graded Lledr Valley to Blaenau Ffestiniog. However the line to Blaenau was not completed until 1879 and was built to a standard gauge so all other proposals were abandoned.
Betws Y Coed station was opened in 1868 and provided goods and passenger services. It helped transform the sleepy hamlet of Betws into the thriving tourist destination it is today. The station today is an unmanned halt and the original rail bridge which would have served the down platform remains intact joining the mainline to the adjacent miniature railway and GZ! Betws Y Coed is a lovely place to visit so why not come by train and stay a while. If travelling by car there is a car park at the Conwy Valley Railway adjacent to the cache or a pay and display in the main station over the footbridge.
The cache is a simple straightforward, its all about the location!
