Geocache Description:

A short walk along a maintained, but mostly forgotten footpath with some history and a nice view.

Advice: Start from the top - there is no parking at the bottom of this footpath

This is a short, very quiet but interesting walk past an ancient village half-timbered house (in some disrepair), down a tunnelled sunken lane and a fantastic view just beyond GZ.

History: Hennock is a very old village, with settlements dating back to the stone age. It's mentioned in the Domesday book of 1066 and due to local mining, enjoyed a profitable time through the 1800 and 1900s due to Lead, Silver, Micaceous Haemetite and other minerals found in abundance.

This footpath existed to serve Franklands Farm, which was the major dairy farm of its time and supplied much of Hennock and surrounding areas with milk and cheese. Workers would use this path to commute, and other occupants would also walk it to get fresh milk. (Although a horse and cart milkman would undoutably have delivered to the village from here). Also - there was mining carried out very close to the farm in the 1800s, and the ruins of a mill at the bottom by the Hyner Stream bridge can still be seen.

Nowadays it receives hardly any traffic. Sadly the field into which it emerges is being left for nature to reclaim (thus there's a short squeeze of bracken and brambles after the cache - but worth pushing through to admire the fantastic view across the Teign Valley towards Haldon and its Belvedere.

This is Letterbox Hybrid cache. There is a permanently affixed rubber stamp (not bespoke, sorry!), but bring your own inkpad if you wish to make an impression.  A standard geocaching log is also inside as with a traditional geocache.

2019: This is now a traditional container following the disappearance of the original, complete with stamp. The container is unusual, so that hopefully makes up for it.
