I've passed by this feature several times and not noticed it. When it did first catch my eye, I wondered if it was a hole caused by a fallen tree - but no stump or moot. Then I pondered if it was a small potato cave, perhaps with a long-gone door. But it's too far from the ruined farmhouse up the track and on a bridlepath someone would soon nick any contents.
Then my eyes adjusted and I saw the water. I flashed my bike light up inside and saw it was lined, so this is clearly a spring-head well.
