Geocache Description:

Village signs is a series of caches based on the ornate signs that depict the heritage, history and culture of the villages that put them up (normally on the village green!).

The old English name for Sawley was Sallé, meaning "hill where willow trees grow"

The village was originally built on the slightly higher ground around All Saints' Church.

The village sign depicts four pictures and the Erewash Coat of Arms.

The pictures show the Erewash Canal, a pair of shire horse attached to a plough, All Saints' Church and the Railway Bridge at Long Eaton Station.

More information about Sawley can be found at: http://www.archive.long-eaton.com/sawley.asp

AS A MARK OF RESPECT THE CACHE IS NOT LOCATED ON THE WAR MEMORIAL

Placed with the kind permission of Sawley Parish Council

About Village Sign Caches. This cache belongs to the Village Sign Series, a series of caches based on ornate signs that depict the heritage, history and culture of the villages that put them up (generally on the village green!). The signs can be made of different materials from fibreglass to wood, from forged steel to stone. They can depict anything from local industry to historical events. The tradition probably started in Norfolk or Suffolk and has now spread across most of the country so we thought we would base a series on them! More information and statistics can be found at the Village Signs Website - https://www.villagesignseries.co.uk
